Rehabilitation After A Heart Attack
Life takes on a new meaning after you've had a heart attack. There are many do's and don'ts that you need to keep in mind to ensure proper recovery. What is most necessary, however, is a cardiac rehabilitation program to put the rails of your life back on track.
What is cardiac rehab?
A cardiac rehab program is a kind of training, which the heart patient undertakes after a heart attack. It helps you modify your lifestyle so as to reduce the risk of another attack. What you eat, how you work, the kind of exercise you do and even how you live are all included in a cardiac rehab program. Such a program may last for 8-10 weeks depending upon the severity of the problem. However, programs are generally tailored to fit individual needs of the patient and can differ in diet and exercise routine.
Aims of a rehab program
Emotional sustenance:
• Counseling the patient about his or her understanding of the disease process and its proper management.
• Supporting patients at an emotional level. Patients are also assessed for depressive or anxiety disorders, sexual dysfunction, excessive distress/stress, dependence and inadequate social support and then treated accordingly.
Physical rehab:
• Starting a regulated exercise program. The exercise program may include light to moderate physical activity about three to four times a week for 12 weeks. However, all exercises should be strictly conducted under professional guidance.
• The program also helps patients to reduce all risk factors such as reducing high blood pressure, high cholesterol level and diabetes. Apart from this, proper diet and medication are also part of the program.
•Vocational guidance is also provided to the patients so that they may return to their job or choose another job that fits in with their new health requirements.
Your role
A cardiac rehabilitation program improves functional capacity and overall quality of life and reduces the risk of further heart problems. But any rehabilitation program can only be effective if you follow it strictly. Besides, there are a few other things that you need to do yourself. These include:
• Stay optimistic: Your attitude plays an important role in your rehab. Accept the reality with a positive frame of mind as this will speed up the recovery process.
• Family support: Enlist the support of your family and friends to provide you emotional support and help you maintain a healthy lifestyle.
• Follow a schedule: Stick to a routine, be it for exercise or any other activity. However, ensure that it is practically feasible and easy to follow so that you can continue it for a longer period.
• Proper diet: This is an absolute must and you must ensure that you take a diet that is low in cholesterol and fat. Always consult your doctor before you make your diet plan.
• Ask your doctor: Before starting with any activity, check with your doctor. Your checklist of questions should include the following:
When can I drive a car?
When can I go back to work?
Can I go back to the same job?
When can I travel by plane?
When can I resume playing sports?
Can I take alcohol?
A heart attack does not mean the end of the world. Many patients not only survive but also thrive after an attack. All you need to do is stick to your rehab program, make a few adjustments and follow them religiously.
