Dealing With Lower Back Pain

Although low back pain can be quite severe, in 90 per cent of cases the pain improves without surgery. However, many patients who suffer from low back pain may face recurrence within one year. Remember since your nerve root is irritated you may feel uncomfortable in any position; sitting, walking, standing and lying. It would be a good idea to find the most comfortable position for yourself and be in that for most of the time. Apart from this, don't forget exercise and correct body movements are the best shields from lower back pains.

Dos for Lower Back Pain

•Always sit on a firmer surface rather than a soft surface.
• When lifting anything, face it head on and bend the knees, not your back.
• Sit erect.
•Warm up before doing any strenuous activity
•When working at a computer, keep the monitor directly in front of you, not to one side. If the lower back aches, ice is recommended and should be applied for at least 20-30 minutes.

Don'ts for Lower Back Pain

• Don't cross your legs.
• When sleeping, do not sleep on your stomach or with arms over the head
• Never take a pain killer or anti-inflammatory and then exercise.
• Don't wear worn out shoes.
• Don't exercise the low back if there is pain.
• Avoid holding the telephone between ear and shoulder.

The Importance of Exercise

You know that exercise improves your appearance and general health, but it is actually better than that. It keeps pains and injuries at bay, especially lower back pains. Studies have shown that a significant improvement in lower back pain is evident in people who have more active lifestyles.

Although the benfits of exercise cannot be overstated, the wrong type of exercise may actually do more harm then good for lower back pain problems. Placing excessive stress on the back doing weight lifting exercises such as lifting heavy weights, squatting, and climbing are not recommended. So the main points to bring home is to keep in mind that exercise is a good idea, but ensure that you exercise correctly so that your lower back pain diminishes and your lifespan increases.

Whether you suffer from acute back pain or a more sever chronic back pain, steps can be taken to live a healthier and less painful lifestyle.
